When I got home and looked at the photo I noticed a sign at the door that says Cantina Royal. Googled it and turns out it's a Mexican bar. Maybe we'll go there one day.

Last night I went out for dinner in the West Village, NYC, with my cousin. We wanted to eat in a quiet place, away from all the busy streets. West Village is perfect for that. It feels a bit like home to me. I think the houses look a lot like those pretty Amsterdam houses. The streets are so cosy.
First we wanted to go to Jeffrey's Groceries but there wasn't anything on the menu that was interesting. So we walked further and then suddenly we saw this café called Minerva. It reminded me of a French or Brussels type of bistro. The food was ok, the wine was perfect and the atmosphere was great. i am definitely going back there sometime.

I first came across this picture and then googled it. Then I found this video. How crazy is this??

The pictures are taken by Pieter Hugo, a South African photographer. Pieter Hugo created the series The Hyena Men while traveling throughout Nigeria with a troupe of animal charmers and their collection of tenuously domesticated hyenas, monkeys and snakes. The portraits feature groupings of men and animals surrounded by the barren urban centers of Northern Nigeria, which were taken during quiet moments between the spectacles of street performances. This is my favorite pen. It's from a German (Heidelberg) brand Kaweco. It looks like a normal ballpoint pen but it actually has an ink cartridge in it. It writes so smoothly and the size of this pen is perfect. I bought it at Project N°8 in New York.

This is a lovely children's book called Ghost Knigi by Benjamin Sommerhalder (Publisher & Editor in Chief at Nieves, Zurich, Switzerland)

On little Ghost Knigi’s birthnight he receives a book from his Aunt Abel.

These images are amazing ... they come from a series called 'Infra'.

'Richard Mosse's pictures of Congo draw from a different palette of colours, literally. Using recently discontinued Kodak infrared film, his photographs turn the vegetation of the eastern Congo into jarring magenta, while the soldiers' uniforms go purple. It feels as if we have fallen down a rabbit hole, into a more surreal space. Congo always felt that way to him, as if the regular colour spectrum, the usual yardsticks we have, do not quite hack it.'

I found this amazing picture on this Flickr page. It's taken at Zakynthos, the Greek Island. The most famous landmark of the island is the Navagio beach: a cove on the southwest shore, isolated by high cliffs and accessible only by boats.
The beach and sea floor are made of white pebbles, and surrounded by turquoise waters. It is named after a shipwreck which sunk on the shore around 1980. The ridge area from Anafonitria has a small observation deck which overlooks the shipwreck and there is a monastery nearby.
I just want to go there, now.

I think they have the best coffee in Manhattan! Mast Brothers have a chocolate version with Stumptown Coffee (very strong, kept me up all night). Recently Wes Lang designed this set of limited edition mugs for them (includes four mugs in a signed and numbered wooden box).

I often read The Scout and that's how I found out about Smith and Mills. It's a great little place, something between a bar and a restaurant. The food is great (and not so expensive!), the interior is beautiful and the atmosphere is very nice. I loved the place. So if you visit Manhattan, you should check this place out.

Hurricane Irene

Last weekend we had Hurricane Irene visiting us in Princeton, New Jersey. The waiting for the hurricane to arrive was actually the worst part because you don't know at all what to expect. We had some good whiskey and lots of food during the night it arrived. At midnight the power was cut off. We spent 24h without electricity. No internet, no light, no radio, no computer. It was very calming. You feel cut off from the world and it feels good (probably because you know it's temporary). The place where we are staying is nearby Carnegie Lake and the Delaware Canal - so lots of water. The area was flooded really bad so we were living on an island for a day and a night. We could go nowhere because of the surrounding waters. I know there was a lot of property damage for many people but for us it was a special experience.

We visited the Mast Brothers Chocolate shop in Williamsburg (Brooklyn, NY) yesterday. The interior is very 'rough' and they've used a lot of dark wood. There's a table where you can taste some of the chocolate. The packaging is beautiful too! In this movie I discovered that they all hand wrap these ... and they have their own printing machine so really everything is handmade. Amazing. I bought two bars of chocolate: Pecan & Maple + Stumptown Coffee. This last one is very very strong ... I couldn't sleep last night ... :)

Yay! Alexa Chung will be back on TV (scheduled to be broadcast on PBS next summer) with a new show called Thrift America: a series about shopping for vintage clothes and other paraphernalia.
On the show, she and Maya Singer, the series creator and the editor of special projects for Style.com, will comb the country’s consignment shops, garage sales and flea markets for old clothing, furniture, music equipment and other potential treasures to use in various creative endeavors. A few of the places they plan to visit include Orlando, Detroit, Nashville, Alabama and Brooklyn (and, on a less populist note, fashion capitals like Paris and London as well).
